Grassroots Football in Australia: Development versus Competition

“Did you win?” is traditionally one of the first questions a grassroots player will be asked when speaking about their game with family and friends.

It is precisely this mentality, that winning comes before development, that needs to be changed and better understood.

Australian football must have a fundamental change as to how the game is played and coached, with this transformation beginning at the grassroots level.

Understandably, there must be a balance between winning and player development, however, the primary objective must be to develop more ‘world class players’.

In the words of Peter Drucker, ‘the best way to predict the future is to create the future’.

And so, the FFA has commenced this journey in scripting the future for player development with the implementation of the Optus Small Sided Football (OSSF) formats.

OSSF are football games designed especially for children, with fewer players on smaller sized fields. The formats of OSSF allow for greater interaction with the ball and involvement in the game.

OSSF meets the developmental needs of younger players whilst maintaining a strong focus on maximum participation fun and enjoyment.

U9 Newcastle vs Pine Hills Southampton

It was a crisp and breezy morning for our early game against Pine Hills, our first encounter with Samford's alliance club.

Back to a full squad of ten and the team were keen to get into the game - or perhaps we were just all cold.

The pre-match talk was all about who had friends in the other team - there were quite a few which always makes for a fun game.

Having not played Pine Hills I didn't know what to expect, but I didn't expect the game we had!

From the outset our excellent form so far this season wasn't there. Everyone was playing well and giving their all but it just didn't click for once - that happens sometimes.

In the first half there were some great performances but we couldn't manage to score. Pine Hills got one past us and fantastic keeping from Mason - including stopping a missile with his face - kept it at one.

Our girl power was out in force, but mainly in defence, as Ingrid, Emily and Hannah kept it tight.

In the mid-field Joe, Corban and Toby were in the thick of the action while Nick, Connor and Jacob pushed in attack as well as helping out in mid-field.

The second half was a similarly close tussle. Jacob scored one for us from a penalty but most of the action was in the centre of the park.

Toby was great in goals making some great saves and clearing kicks.

I can't remember the last time we saw only three goals in a game, it was a close and entertaining battle. Well played and in great spirit by both sides.

Mason took Player of the Week for great keeping and soldiering on after his big smack in the face.

U11 Arsenal vs Deception Bay A

We started the game with only 8 players with Ryan and Connor unable to make it. Harvey lasted only 10 minutes before succumbing to illness so for most of the game it was 7 players against a very skilful and well drilled team from Deception Bay so everyone had to work extra hard. Lucas showed great skills to score 3 goals and James and Sean pulled off some fantastic saves in goal. Player of the week went to Josie for her great defence which prevented many more goals against us.

Over 35's Mountain Men (2) vs Northstar (0)

Two goals, three points, the rest " silence is golden"
