Information & Resources for Coaches

"A good coach can change a game. A great coach can change a life."

SRFC Coaches

The vast majority of coaches at Samford Rangers Football Club are volunteers, and are typically a parent of one of the players in their team. This is the same across all grassroots and community clubs in Australia. Without our volunteer coaches, we would have no club so they are vital to the on-going success of our club.

Coaching a Miniroos or Juniors team is incredibly rewarding and many coaches start with an Under 6 team and continue coaching the same group of players for many years, making lifelong friendships along the way.

Whilst most SRFC Coaches have some football experience, this is not a pre-requisite to be a good coach. The club offers plenty of support and guidance for all our volunteer coaches .This includes formal coaching courses & training, and structured training programs. More information on the Courses and support available is detailed below.

Coaching Courses and Training

Coaches are encouraged by the Club to attend Football Queensland Coaching Courses and the club will fund the cost of these courses (depending on the course, this is either funded up-front or reimbursed over time). Coach Education is one of the cornerstones of the club philosophy of improving the football experience we offer to our players. As well as the formal FQ coaching courses, the club will hold coach education sessions held throughout the season.

For any coaches seeking advice on training or team set-up, please contact our Technical Director, James Corner for Juniors and Senior Football Director, Steve Forsyth for Seniors.

We want to ensure that our coaches are skilled up in the appropriate drills and principles required for the age group they are coaching.  Our goal is for our coaches to have the following minimum qualifications:

Miniroos – Grass Roots
Miniroos Komodo – Youth C Licence
Junior (U12-16) – Skills Training Certificate
Junior Highest Divisional Junior Team (U12-16) – Youth C Licence
U18 – Game Training Certificate / Senior C Licence

Football Queensland provides a wealth of online Coaching Resources.

Equal Playing Time Policy

Coaches and Managers of under 6 to Under 12 teams must ensure that all players receive equal playing time for each and every gameThe only exception is where a player is injured or does not want to play.

Coaches and Managers of under 13 to Under 16 community teams must ensure that all players receive equal playing time over the entire season. These age groups differ from the younger players because in some games a player may be required to play more or less time than others. This will be adjusted in other games where they play more or less to make up a similar amount of time over the season.

The only exception is where a player:

  • is prepared to play positions the rest of the team are not interested in (e.g. goalkeeper)
  • misses training without a valid reason or does not make a concerted effort while training
  • is not available for one or more games throughout the season

Team Equipment

At the beginning of each season, every coach will be allocated a training kit that will consist of the following:

  • training balls & ball bag
  • training bibs
  • training cones
  • first aid kit
  • Under 6 and Under 7 teams will also be issued with pop-up goals for training

This equipment is to be returned to the club at the end of the season.

Child Safety

It is a strict requirement that all staff and volunteers at SRFC have a current Blue Card.

If you have a current Blue Card, please send the details to our Club Administrator, Kerri Davies, at clubadmin@samfordrangers.org.auIf you do not have a current Blue Card, you can apply for one here. If you have any issues with applying for your Blue Card, please contact Kerri and she can help.

IT IS VITALLY IMPORTANT THAT SRFC COACHES ENSURE THAT ALL PLAYERS THAT ATTEND GAMES AND TRAINING ARE COLLECTED BY THEIR PARENTS/GUARDIANS. PLEASE DO NOT LEAVE THE CLUB UNTIL YOU ARE 100% CERTAIN THAT ALL OF THE PLAYERS IN YOUR TEAM HAVE BEEN SAFELY COLLECTED.

End of Season Players' Player Trophy

The club provides the opportunity for each team to award a Players' Player trophy to a deserving player. There is no specified protocol for the selection process. Some teams take a weekly vote and compile a tally, while others have simply rely upon the Coach/Manager's insight. Closer to the end of season you will be asked for the details of your team's recipient.
