A week after Sign-On Day, U11 players and older participate in a grading process (refer Events for dates/times) after which they are placed into teams of players with similar ability and skill. Grading takes into account players' technique, game awareness, athletic ability and development potential. In order to be placed in the appropriate team it is very important for players to attend the grading sessions.
From the ages of 5 to 9, girls play in mixed (boys & girls) teams. In the year in which they turn 10 years-old, girls have the choice to continue to play in mixed teams or join a girls-only team. Often girls who are exceptionally athletic and skillful are encouraged to continue to play in mixed teams whereas the majority of the girls switch to a girls-only team.

Those of you who are fans of the SBS World Game TV coverage are no doubt familiar with their chief football analyst, Craig Foster. Craig is a former Socceroo and wrote an article (click here to read it) aimed directly at coaches and parents involved at grass-roots clubs such as ours. His article suggests a philosophy that all clubs should adopt and one that is based largely on the Brazilian way. This style of football is quite different from what we currently practice and requires all of us (parents, coaches and players) to start to act differently. Please take the time to read Craig's article.
